US science and Health Council: more data show that e-cigarettes can promote smoking cessation

Recently, David Cameron, director of Bioscience of the US Council for science and health, released his views on the report on the use of e-cigarettes by young people in Britain. He said that a recent survey conducted in schools in England has provided more evidence that e-cigarettes are an effective tool for quitting smoking.

The national health service has just released the results of a survey on smoking, drinking and e-smoking among young people in the UK. Some media found that there was a slight increase in E-Cigarette smoking among teenagers from 2018 to 2021, from 6% to 9%. An official of the Royal College of paediatrics and Child Health told the media that he was deeply disturbed by the increase in e-cigarette smoking among teenagers.

Cameron said that although he was worried about the use of nicotine by minors, he would find some very good news by carefully observing the results: the smoking rate of teenagers in England continued to decline, and e-cigarettes have always been an important part of this public health victory. No matter where you are, this is a result to celebrate, because it adds to the existing evidence supporting e-cigarettes as a smoking cessation tool.

E-cigarettes promote smoking cessation

The survey is conducted every two years among adolescents aged 11 to 15. This special report included responses from 9289 participants from 119 schools. Most of the teenagers who use e-cigarettes are or have been smokers.

The report points out that 56% of smokers are current e-cigarette users. In addition, the number of regular smokers who regularly use e-cigarettes has more than doubled; From 29% in 2018 to 61% in 2021. This means that e-cigarettes, widely considered to be less harmful than smoking, have helped many young people replace some or all of their cigarette consumption.

In other words, the increase in e-cigarettes largely reflects the decrease in smoking. Nobody wants teenagers to use products containing nicotine. However, if they want to violate public health rules, as teenagers are used to doing, e-cigarettes are a less harmful way.
